Lee Minho Says 'Boys over Flowers' Would Likely Be Banned If Aired Today Due to Its Crazy Story
Actor Lee Minho shared that he believes "Boys over Flowers" would likely be banned if it was aired today because of its crazy story.

On January 6, Lee Minho and actress Kong Hyo-jin appeared on "Zzan Bro," the YouTube talk show hosted by entertainer Shin Dong-yeob.

While reminiscing about the past, Lee Minho talked about the hit drama "Boys over Flowers," which propelled him to stardom 16 years ago.

Lee Minho shared, "After the first episode of 'Boys over Flowers' aired, my mini homepage (the most popular Korean social media back then) was flooded with curse words because my character bullied Geum Jan-di (the main female character played by actress Koo Hye Sun)."

The actor continued, "They basically were saying that I was bullying Geum Jan-di too much. The first episode was mostly about me bullying her at school. At first, only thousands of people visited my mini homepage daily, but after the broadcast, 500,000 to 600,000 of them came and cursed at me. Seeing that, I thought, 'Is this okay? Did I make a mistake by playing him?' But after the second episode aired, people started giving me love as much as they had hated me."
Lee MinhoLee MinhoKong Hyo-jin remarked, "If those bullying scenes aired now, they'd be grounds for a lawsuit," and Lee Minho said, "No, it wouldn't be a lawsuit, but more like the show would be banned. There was a lot of school bullying, and even a scene where my character sprayed a fire extinguisher on Geum Jan-di. These days, there's a meme going around that says, 'Back then, the whole country was crazy.'"

Shin Dong-yeob asked, "If you watched 'Boys over Flowers' now, you'd probably find the story a bit off, right?"

Nodding, Lee Minho responded, "I mean, yeah. I think it was crazy. Even looking at my hair, I wasn't in my right mind. I was so desperate during the audition that I went with that hairstyle. I really wanted to be in that drama."
Lee MinhoLee MinhoShin Dong-yeob then said, "Yeah, you know, I thought you became an overnight star, but it turns out you had a lot of supporting roles before 'Boys over Flowers.'"

Lee Minho agreed, saying, "That's right. I had a lot of supporting roles. I played a waiter, a friend of someone—lots of minor roles. And before 'Boys over Flowers,' I only got roles playing poor people. For like five years straight."

Shin Dong-yeob added, "I've seen some of the roles you played before. And back then, you really looked poor. You were so different from how you looked in 'Boys over Flowers,'" to which Lee Minho replied, "Because of my 'Boys over Flowers' image, many assumed I grew up in a very wealthy household," with a chuckle.
