The film 'The Black Nuns,' starring actress Song Hye-kyo, has surpassed its break-even point just three weeks after its release.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticket sales system, 'The Black Nuns' attracted 83,540 viewers nationwide from January 7 to 9, ranking fourth at the box office. The cumulative audience count now stands at 1,600,314.
With this achievement, 'The Black Nuns' has successfully reached its break-even point within three weeks of its release. The film, which had a production budget of 10.3 billion won, managed to lower its break-even point to 1.6 million viewers by securing pre-sales in 160 countries before its release.
Song Hye-kyo's dedication has truly shone through. To mark her return to the big screen after 11 years, she made her first appearance on a variety show in 23 years and filmed YouTube content, putting in significant effort for promotion. She also actively participated in stage greetings and fan meetings from the Lunar New Year holiday through the second week of its release.
Although 'The Black Nuns' initially gained momentum during the Lunar New Year holiday, it was overtaken by 'Hitman 2' during that period. However, thanks to its strong audience turnout in the early days of release, it was able to surpass the break-even point.
Having achieved its first goal with the domestic release, 'The Black Nuns' is set to continue its international rollout, starting with Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and Laos on January 6, followed by North America and Myanmar on January 7, and Singapore and Malaysia on January 13.
