On February 19 episode of tvN's television show "You Quiz on the Block," Cha Joo Young sat down with the hosts Yu Jae Seok and Cho Sae-ho to talk about her career and her breakout role in Netflix's mega-hit series "The Glory."
In 'The Glory,' Moon Dong-eun (actress Song Hye Kyo), a victim of horrific abuse in high school, sets an elaborate revenge plan in motion to make her tormentors pay for their crimes.
Cha Joo Young played the role of Choi Hye-jeong, who survived the abuse by fitting in with the perpetrators.
The actress said, "I auditioned for almost two months. I was meeting with the director and writers nearly every week. Since I was reading the same script over and over again, I started wondering, 'Why are they keeping me around?'"
Then came the moment that sealed the deal: out of pure annoyance, she swore, and the director loved it.
She explained, "One day, the director asked me with a bright smile, 'how have you been, Joo Young?' And in my mind, I was like, 'Seriously?! What do you expect me to say? Great? I mean, look at me!' So I just said, 'Like shxt.' And he absolutely loved that. That attitude was exactly what they were looking for in the character."
"I had a good feeling about it. You can tell when you see how hard the other actors are working, you know. Everyone on set was fully committed. I even asked the director how he picked the cast, and he said it was all about finding people who were desperate to give it their all. We all got along really well, but no one made small talk on set. We were so focused, thinking, 'I can't be the one who lets the team down.'"
She wrapped up by saying, "I went to set acting super confident, even when I wasn't. And the director really brought that energy out of me."
