
Former soccer player Gu Bon-sang shared the news of Kang Ji-yong's passing on social media on the 23rd. According to the announcement, Kang passed away on the 22nd, and a memorial service has been arranged at the Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province. His wife and 3-year-old daughter are listed as the chief mourners. The funeral procession is scheduled for 6:30 AM on the 25th, with the burial to take place at Cheonan Memorial Park. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born in 1989, Kang Ji-yong was drafted by the Pohang Steelers in the 2009 K League draft, marking the start of his professional career. After three years with Pohang, he played for Busan IPark, Bucheon FC, Gangwon FC, Incheon United, and Gimpo FC, retiring from professional soccer in 2022.
Kang Ji-yong made headlines last February when he and his wife appeared on 'Divorce Camp', sharing updates about their lives post-retirement. Working at a chemical manufacturing plant, Kang revealed conflicts with his wife stemming from financial issues related to his family home. He expressed feeling overwhelmed by the stress, saying he had not received any of the substantial earnings from his soccer career from his parents, and at times felt a deep despair. Despite these challenges, the couple showed a strong desire to mend their relationship, earning the support of viewers.
However, the news of Kang's death just two months after their TV appearance has brought renewed sadness.
