Renowned South Korean director Lee Chang-dong is set to direct a new film this fall.

According to film industry sources, Lee Chang-dong is scheduled to begin shooting "A Possible Love" (working title) in September, with actors Jeon Do-yeon, Seol Kyung-gu, and Jo In-sung currently in positive discussions to join the cast.

Preparation for Lee Chang-dong's new project has been quietly underway since the end of last year, with details kept under wraps due to previous projects facing challenges. The plot of the movie remains a closely guarded secret.

Having completed the screenplay and secured a cast of leading actors, Lee Chang-dong has reportedly turned down all invitations to film festivals both domestically and internationally to focus on pre-production.

The new project is not solely funded by Korean capital but also includes investment from France, a move not uncommon among auteur directors like Hirokazu Kore-eda and the Dardenne brothers, who have also sought international financing for their films.

Aiming for completion in the first half of next year, the film seems poised for submission to next year's Cannes Film Festival, a venue where Lee has a storied history. He won the Best Actress Award (Jeon Do-yeon) for "Secret Sunshine" in 2007 and the Best Screenplay Award for "Poetry" in 2010. Lee also served as a jury member in 2009.

Lee Chang-dong's most recent film, "Burning," was released in 2018.
