During a press interview for the Netflix series 'Mercy for None' held in a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of the 12th, So Ji-sub shared his current concerns as an actor.
So Ji-sub recently expressed his worries on a web variety show featuring Shin Dong-yeob and producer Na Young-seok for the promotion of 'Mercy for None', saying that as he approaches 30 years since his debut, it feels like he has used up all his "ammunition", and pondered whether he needs to show a 'new face' as an actor. He elaborated on these thoughts, saying, "I keep having these concerns."
"I don't think I'm a method actor. It seems like no matter what I do now, it appears similar. 'What more can I do?', 'Is it right to seek a new look?' These are the questions I ask myself," So Ji-sub candidly stated. He continued, "Even when I try to present a new look, people might still see it as similar. It makes me wonder if I should just stick to what I'm good at. I'm in a phase of going back and forth with these thoughts. It seems there's no right answer."
The dilemma between venturing into new territories and focusing on what one excels at is a common one among actors. So Ji-sub mentioned he doesn't share these concerns with others, saying, "It doesn't seem to help to share them. No one has the answers."
So Ji-sub, who has yet to find a definitive answer, mentioned, "If 'Mercy for None' does well, maybe I'll stop searching for what I'm good at for a while," indicating he's finding some direction in his contemplations.
Meanwhile, 'Mercy for None', based on a popular webtoon of the same name, is a noir action series that follows Nam Ki-joon (played by So Ji-sub), who, after cutting off his own Achilles' heel and leaving the world of 'Mercy for None', returns 11 years later following the death of his brother, Ki-seok, a former second-in-command of the organization, to seek revenge and uncover the truth behind his death. So Ji-sub's casting as the protagonist 'Nam Ki-joon', which was highly anticipated, marks his return to the intense noir action genre for the first time in 13 years since 'A Company Man'.
'Mercy for None', a heavy hardboiled action genre, has been reborn with an expanded narrative and a variety of spectacles from the original, offering intense entertainment. From So Ji-sub to Heo Jun-ho, Gong Myung, Choo Young-woo, Ahn Gil-kang, Jo Han-chul, Lee Beom-soo, and special appearances by Cha Seung-won and Lee Jun-hyuk, 'Mercy for None' maximizes immersion with a blood-stained ensemble cast by distinctive actors.
Comprising a total of 7 episodes, 'Mercy for None' was released in its entirety on Netflix on the 6th.
