As the Netflix movie 'KPop Demon Hunters' continues to sweep global popularity, directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans have shared their thoughts on the warm reception.
Director Maggie Kang expressed her feelings about the movie's global success, saying, "‘KPop Demon Hunters’ is the first animated film that takes place in modern Korea and deals with Korean culture, with a cast of Korean voice actors and singers. It’s incredibly meaningful to have realized a goal I’ve dreamed of since the beginning of my career, and to share this experience with the cast has been very rewarding."
Co-director Chris Appelhans mentioned, "We wanted to create a movie filled with fun, trends, and bold action. At the same time, we aimed to capture the moment and feeling when a really good song captures people's hearts, neutralizing all discrimination and darkness in the world, and even making the demons within us lose their power." This statement reiterates the intriguing message embedded within the story of 'KPop Demon Hunters'.
'KPop Demon Hunters' is an action fantasy animation that follows KPop superstars 'Rumi', 'Mira', and 'Zoey' as they act as hidden heroes protecting the world behind their glamorous stages. Since its release on the 20th, the movie has topped the Netflix Worldwide Movie Chart from the 21st to the 23rd, according to FlixPatrol.
In 'KPop Demon Hunters', the story revolves around the highly popular KPop idol group 'Huntrix' and their rival group 'Saja Boys', unfolding a narrative never seen before. 'Huntrix' are not ordinary idols but 'Hunters' who create 'Soul Shields' to protect the world with their voices from evil spirits, while their rivals, 'Saja Boys', are composed entirely of evil spirits. This fresh setting has instantly captivated audiences worldwide. Especially, tracks like 'Golden', 'Soda Pop', 'Takedown', reminiscent of real KPop hits, along with traditional Korean elements and unique cultural aspects embedded throughout the film, have sparked discussions.
The music is also a hit. The soundtrack of 'KPop Demon Hunters' has reached number one on the US iTunes Album Chart, with songs charting as well. Huntrix's 'What It Sounds Like' hit 18th, 'Golden' 20th, and 'How It's Done' 33rd. Saja Boys' 'Your Idol' and 'Soda Pop' reached 24th and 54th, respectively.
