Set to premiere in October, the new Friday-Saturday series (written by Lee Hana; directed by Song Hyun-wook and Hwang In-hyuk) follows two strangers who enter a 90-day sham marriage to lock down a grand-prize luxury newlywed home. The pairing of Choi and Jung is already sparking buzz for its rom-com chemistry.
On Sept. 2, SBS dropped video from the drama’s first table read on its official YouTube channel, revealing the duo’s instant “picture-perfect newlywed” act ― with a secret pact underneath.
Choi plays Kim Wooju, the fourth-generation heir to Myeongsundang, billed as Korea’s first bakery. “I hope we stay happy all the way to the final day of filming. I’ll give it my all,” he said at the read. Jung steps in as Yoo Meri, a scrappy designer who pitches the pretend marriage to secure the coveted apartment prize. “Here’s to wrapping safely with no one getting hurt,” she added.
From the jump, the two delivered laugh-out-loud beats and fluttery moments. Choi leans into the “bread heir” charm ― the complete package of a next-in-line successor ― while Jung’s lovable, relatable turn as a bride-to-be on the brink raises the stakes with heart.
As Wooju and Meri form a strategic alliance to keep their newlywed home windfall, their tightrope romance promises equal parts sweet and nerve-jangling fun. With Choi’s trusted screen presence and Jung’s undefeated rom-com instincts, anticipation is high for a pretend marriage that feels realer than the real thing.
The ensemble adds extra flavor: Bae Na-ra as Baek Sang-hyun, a department store VP keeping tabs on the couple; Shin Seul-gi as Yoon Jin-kyung, Wooju’s family-medicine doctor bestie; Seo Beom-jun as another Kim Wooju ― Meri’s ex-fiance and the hero’s namesake; Jung Ae-ri as Go Pil-nyeon, Wooju’s formidable grandmother and chairwoman of Myeongsundang; Kim Young-min as Jang Han-gu, Wooju’s uncle by marriage and a director at the bakery; Baek Ji-won as Wooju’s aunt Kim Mi-yeon; and Yoon Bok-in as Meri’s mom, Oh Young-sook.
Despite being the first read-through, the cast slipped into character with full commitment, cranking up excitement for "Would You Marry Me".
“From the very first table read, Choi Woo-shik and Jung So-min brought 200% of the sweet romance and playful comedy, heating up the room,” the producers teased, asking viewers to look forward to the duo’s “sweet, taut 90-day pretend newlywed chemistry” as they fight to keep the apartment prize.
"Would You Marry Me" will follow "The Mantis: Original Sin" and premiere this October on SBS.
