Baby V.O.X, pioneers of K-pop’s first generation, are looking back on the chaos they weathered both online and off ― and the dangers that came with fame.
On Sept. 3, all five members ― Kim E Z, Lee Hee-jin, Shim Eun-jin, Kan Mi-yeon and Yoon Eun-hye ― reunited on Episode 50 of comedian Park Na-rae’s YouTube variety series "Naraesik," opening up about their peak-era schedules, behind-the-scenes moments and long-rumored rifts.
They recalled the grind of first-gen girl group life. “Thirteen appearances a day was the baseline,” they said, remembering a “What Should I Do” stage where a revolving platform sent members and dancers tumbling. “You couldn’t show pain ― you had to pop right back up. That’s what you did for the team.”
The variety-show stunts were just as intense. They rattled off circus training, bungee jumping and even bug-habitat challenges. “I once ate bullfrog cooked like fried chicken,” Kan said. “And in Peru, we tried guinea pig. I’d usually taste it first and tell the others, ‘It’s okay,’ then they’d try it too.”
They also addressed fan culture and safety, recalling a car break-in where thieves slipped a hand through a cracked window to unlock the door and ransack the vehicle.
“I used to write down everything in my diary,” Shim shared. “It was serious because it could impact other idol groups, too. I even logged things like having meals with idols who were dating. It was basically Pandora’s box.”
She added, “I haven’t kept a diary since. Thankfully, it’s never surfaced ― probably because several fans stole it together and tore out pages to split among themselves.”
As for rumored infighting, the group drew a line. “Let’s stop the team ‘sides’ narrative,” they said. “Sometimes three of us might appear together, sometimes two. If that’s what it takes to keep showing up for a long time, we think that’s better.”
Baby V.O.X will hold their solo concert, "BACK to V.O.X: New Breath," on Sept. 26?27 at Kyung Hee University’s Grand Peace Palace in Seoul.
