Korean Comedy Legend Jeon Yoo-sung Dies at 76
Jeon Yoo-sung
Jeon Yoo-sung, a towering figure in Korean comedy, has died. He was 76.

According to an exclusive report from The Fact, Jeon passed away around 9:05 p.m. KST on the 25th at Jeonbuk National University Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment. The Korea Comedians Association said it was “deeply saddened” and noted that funeral services will be held under the association’s auspices. He is survived by his daughter and a granddaughter.

Jeon underwent a procedure for a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) in July and was later readmitted with a recurrence. In recent days, his condition worsened; he drifted in and out of consciousness and reportedly shared final words with loved ones.

News of his passing has shaken comedians across generations. A comedian who recently visited him told SBS Entertainment News, “He was very critical. We tried to prepare ourselves, but hearing the news still feels like losing one of the pillars of our lives.”

Born in 1949, Jeon was a pioneering force who helped lay the foundation for modern Korean comedy, delivering sharp wit and satire across television and the stage. He served as honorary chair of the Busan International Comedy Festival in 2013 and taught comedy at Yewon Arts University, mentoring a new wave of talents including Cho Sae-ho and Kim Shin-young.

He also brought laughter into everyday life in the town of Inwol in Namwon, nurturing local festivals and performances and running the grassroots “Comedy Delivery Box” Theater. At one point, he even operated a noodle shop, where he chatted with fans between orders.

Even late in life, Jeon was beloved for his quick wit and clear-eyed outlook. Appearing on the YouTube show “Kkondaehee” last year, he left fans with a line that now resonates even more: “Don’t sneak off to cry. Promise me you won’t.”
