Yoon Ga-eun Explains Why Her New Film Is Titled 'The World of Love'

At a press screening and production briefing at CGV Yongsan in Seoul, director Yoon Ga-eun opened up about the layered meaning behind the title of her new film.

“The Korean title ('Sagyeui Juin') is one I’d held onto even before I started writing,” Yoon said. “Once the screenplay was finished, it felt like the right fit for this story.”

As for the English title, she added, “In Korean, juin means someone who owns something―and it’s also our heroine’s name. That nuance doesn’t really carry over in English. We settled on ‘The World of Love’ after the film was complete, because while the protagonist has been deeply hurt, we wanted her journey to be about how the many forms of love around her help her heal and move forward.”

Following earlier works centered on children like "The World of Us" and "The House of Us," Yoon said she was ready to focus on teenage girls this time. “I’ve long wanted to explore girls’ adolescence, sexuality, and love. I envisioned a healthy, upbeat teen who boldly and honestly explores sex and people, but as I wrote, other elements kept coming in. Living through the pandemic ultimately shaped the story into what it is now.”

"The World of Love" marks Yoon’s first feature in six years. The film follows an enigmatic 18-year-old high schooler who lives somewhere between popular kid and attention-seeker. After she alone refuses to sign a schoolwide petition, she begins receiving mysterious notes―setting off a chain of events that upends her world. The title has already been invited to major fall festivals, including the Toronto International Film Festival, the Warsaw Film Festival, and the BFI London Film Festival, drawing strong early buzz.

The film opens Oct. 22.
