“The People Upstairs” has claimed the No. 1 spot among Korean films at the box office for a second straight day.
According to the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS database, the film drew 22,474 admissions nationwide on the 4th, placing No. 3 overall but No. 1 among Korean releases. As of 7 a.m. on the 5th, day three of its run, it also leads presales among Korean titles ― a sign of a potential weekend bounce.
The film follows an upstairs couple (Ha Jung-woo and Lee Hanee) and a downstairs pair (Kong Hyo-jin and Kim Dong-wook) who end up sharing a late-night dinner after nights of very adult “upstairs noise” push tensions to a boil. Early audiences are responding to director Ha Jung-woo’s snappy, irreverent dialogue and the quartet’s crackling chemistry, fueling strong word of mouth.
