On the 9th, his agency A2Z Entertainment announced that Cho will exit tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block” and KBS2’s “2 Days & 1 Night.”
“Cho Sae-ho feels deep responsibility for the speculation and controversy surrounding him,” the agency said, noting he’s mindful of viewers who felt uncomfortable and didn’t want his presence to place added burden on the crews “who pour their sweat and effort into these shows.” After discussing it with producers, he decided to step down.
The agency also firmly denied the organized crime ties rumors. “As stated in our earlier position, Cho Sae-ho has no involvement whatsoever with the business activities of a man identified as Mr. Choi,” A2Z said. “Claims that he accepted money or gifts from Mr. Choi to promote a business are categorically false.”
A2Z added that Cho and the company will take more forceful legal action going forward to resolve the misunderstandings and restore his reputation. “We will move swiftly and firmly. We promise to dispel all doubts and return in good health,” the statement read.
The agency further conveyed Cho’s gratitude for the concern and tough love he’s received. He sees this as a chance for reflection, they said, and will work to bring audiences “healthier laughter.” They asked fans to continue supporting his next steps.
The controversy escalated after a poster identified only as “A” claimed on social media that Cho was close with a local organized crime figure surnamed Choi―alleging Choi ran an illegal gambling site, gave Cho expensive gifts, and had his franchise promoted by the star. A photo of Cho and Mr. Choi together at what appeared to be a nightlife venue fueled the uproar.
Cho’s side called those assertions “speculation” and untrue, but viewer message boards for his programs soon filled with petitions urging his removal, and public sentiment soured.
