Trot Singer Kim Ho-joong's Team Denies Prison Choir Performance

Reports that singer Kim Ho-joong, 34, who is currently incarcerated, performed at Seoul’s Sejong Center as part of a prison choir are false.

“Stories claiming Kim appeared on the Sejong Center Grand Theater stage as a member of the Somang Correctional Institution choir are baseless,” his agency said Tuesday. “He is not in the choir, and as he remains in custody, he never went anywhere near the venue.”

Several outlets had alleged Kim took part in the 42nd Sejin Music Concert and even appeared to limp onstage. Those claims are entirely untrue.

Kim is serving a two-and-a-half-year sentence at Somang Correctional Institution after he crossed the centerline in Seoul’s Apgujeong neighborhood last May, collided with a taxi, and fled the scene while driving under the influence. He withdrew his final appeal, making the sentence definitive, and was recently reported to be on the Justice Ministry’s list for upcoming parole reviews.

Separately, a former Somang Correctional Institution employee in his 40s was fired and is under police investigation for allegedly demanding money and threatening Kim. Police questioned Kim as the victim; the ex-employee is being investigated without detention.
