Hollywood tentpole "Avatar: Fire and Ash" drew more than 1.3 million moviegoers in its opening weekend in South Korea, igniting the local box office.
According to the Korean Film Council’s KOBIS database, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" sold 1,299,395 tickets nationwide from Dec. 19-21 to claim the No. 1 spot. Its running total in Korea now stands at 1,744,769 admissions.
Opening on Dec. 17 in Korea, the film kicked off with 265,055 day-one admissions and kept momentum through the weekend. With the Christmas holiday and Lunar New Year corridor ahead, the breakout run shows no signs of cooling.
The North American debut is running hot, too. Per Box Office Mojo, "Avatar: Fire and Ash" earned 88 million dollars over its first three-day weekend after opening Dec. 19, landing at No. 1 domestically, while global grosses have surged past 345 million dollars.
Set after the death of Neteyam, the story finds Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) facing a new threat as Varang (Oona Chaplin) leads the Ash People, plunging Pandora into a fiery new conflict. The third chapter following "Avatar" and "Avatar: The Way of Water," the film ups the ante with next-level visuals designed to deliver pure big-screen spectacle.
