The film ‘The King's Warden,’ starring Yoo Hae-jin and Park Ji-hoon, opened at No. 1 at the box office.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated box office tally on the 5th, ‘The King's Warden’ drew 117,792 moviegoers nationwide on the 4th, its opening day, knocking ‘Once We Were Us’ out of the top spot.
Set in 1457 at Cheongnyeongpo, the film follows the young former king Danjong―deposed and exiled―and the residents of Gwangcheongol village who receive him. After surpassing 150,000 pre-sale tickets before release, it signaled strong demand and is off to a smooth start at No. 1.
With competitor ‘HUMINT’ opening next week and a two-way showdown expected over the Lunar New Year holiday, first-weekend numbers will be critical. ‘The King's Warden’ is aiming for long-term success through word of mouth into the holiday period.
