Images of Kim Nam-gil and Park Bo-gum as Suyang and Anpyeong in the film "Canvas of Blood" have been revealed.
Distributor Plus M Entertainment shared new stills from "Canvas of Blood" on its official social channels on Feb. 9.
"Canvas of Blood" follows brothers Suyang and Anpyeong after the completion of the painting "Canvas of Blood", which captures a dreamlike, uncanny paradise―and sparks different visions of “utopia” in each of them. Centering on Prince Anpyeong, son of Sejong, who described an ideal land he saw in a dream to painter Ahn Gyeon and had the work completed in three days, the film depicts a defining, dramatic moment of the Joseon dynasty.
Kim Nam-gil plays Suyang, a man driven by the desire to become king. Reading his younger brother Anpyeong’s ambitions through the painting, Suyang grows increasingly ruthless. Through Suyang, Kim is set to showcase a wide range―from a man awakening to his own ambition to an inner life wracked by suspicion and anxiety toward Anpyeong.
Park Bo-gum’s Anpyeong loves beauty and collects art. He is a leading calligrapher and a multi-hyphenate artist in poetry, calligraphy, and painting, often called Joseon’s “prince of culture.” Through Anpyeong―who longs to realize the paradise he saw in his dream―Park is poised to capture audiences once again. His idealism, and the unwavering beliefs he reveals as he opposes his brother Suyang, suggest a high synchronicity with Park and raise anticipation for another transformation.
Painter Ahn Gyeon―Anpyeong’s artistic partner who created "Canvas of Blood"―is portrayed by Lee Hyun-wook.
In the newly released stills, Kim Nam-gil and Park Bo-gum radiate very different energies. Kim fixes his gaze on someone with a face full of desire, while Park’s trademark clean-cut look is matched with steely resolve. Though these archetypes are familiar in period pieces, all eyes are on how they’ll reinvent them as the film’s key players. Rather than focusing solely on a succession struggle, "Canvas of Blood" appears to zero in on clashes between ideals and reality―and between art and power.
With the recent success of "The King's Warden", set against the backdrop of the Gyeyu Jeongnan, anticipation is naturally building for "Canvas of Blood", which shares the same era.
Director Jang Hoon, whose credits include the 10-million-viewer "A Taxi Driver," "The Front Line," "Secret Reunion," and "Rough Cut," helms the film. It is co-produced by Doodoong Pictures and Sanai Pictures.
"Canvas of Blood" has wrapped filming and is now in post-production.
