Fans are having a field day spotting the show’s ultra-detailed rules, earning "Phantom Lawyer" the nickname “the setting restaurant” for serving up one great idea after another.
First up: the feet. The dead who visit attorney Shin I-rang (played by Yoo Yeon-seok) first appear floating, feet off the ground. They don’t know who they are or how they died. It’s a visual for their unstable state. But the moment I-rang discovers a spirit’s name and birth date―pinning down their identity―the ghost regains memories and emotions from life and finally touches the ground.
The production calls it “the weight of memory.” That split second when a spirit’s life comes flooding back anchors each ghost’s story. Another tease: “individual talismans” hidden along the office walls hint at future interactions, raising curiosity about which clients with which backstories will show up next.
Possession isn’t random, either. I-rang’s “possession” follows strict rules. When a ghost’s desire spikes―triggered by a rush of joy, someone they can’t stand, or a flash of anger―the takeover begins, signaled by I-rang’s red cheeks.
The music cues make it even juicier. First client Lee Kang-poong (Heo Sung-tae) boils over whenever Uhm Jung Hwa’s Festival plays―the song his old boss used to blast while beating him. That bubbly track turned “gangster lawyer” I-rang’s action into a cathartic thrill. Second client, trainee Kim Soo-ah (Oh Ye-ju), possesses I-rang after hearing a song from brother-in-law Yoon Bong-soo’s (Jeon Seok-ho) phone―setting up Yoo Yeon-seok’s sweat-and-tears “idol lawyer” choreography, now an instant classic moment.
A ghost’s favorite comfort food is also a powerful Trigger―and comedy gold. Unlike I-rang, who’s allergic to pork, Lee Kang-poong can’t resist the sizzle of samgyeopsal. Kim Soo-ah gets hyped at the sight of a schoolgirl’s dream combo: tteokbokki and ice cream. Viewers relate hard―“Even ghosts can’t say no to good food!”―and are already guessing, “What menu will the next ghost react to?” That speculation is fueling the show’s buzz.
By fusing a “possessed lawyer” premise with courtroom drama―and backing every rule with clear logic and story―"Phantom Lawyer" delivers fresh, feel-good fun. These world-building details supercharge Yoo Yeon-seok’s chameleon performance and turn Friday and Saturday nights into appointment viewing.
The production team shared, “Along with each departed person’s story, we focused on how to visualize the traces and memories they left in the world. Starting with Episode 5 on the 27th, Shin I-rang will flip these rules to solve cases, spotlighting his ‘brainy lawyer’ side. Please look forward to it.”
"Phantom Lawyer" airs every Friday and Saturday at 9:50 p.m.
