On the 17th, SBS held a press conference for the new variety program “Choigang Road - Foodspoiler” (hereafter, Foodspoiler) at a cafe in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Chefs Choi Kang-rok and Kim Do-yoon, host Defconn, and producers Son Jung-min and Ha Jung-seok were in attendance.
Choi drew major buzz last year after winning Season 2 of the Netflix show Culinary Class Wars and sharing his unique philosophy on braised dishes. Despite the spotlight, he isn’t running a personal restaurant right now―unlike other chefs who saw crowds flock to their spots after appearing on Culinary Class Wars. Many fans keep asking, “Where can we actually taste Choi Kang-rok’s food?” and want to know his opening plans.
At the Foodspoiler press conference, Choi was asked if he’s ready to open a restaurant. He answered candidly, “I’m constantly mapping it out. I’m set on running a noodle shop when I’m older. Before that, I’m going to think it through again and plan a place that serves food carrying my own signature.”
However, he emphasized that he’s “still in the planning stage,” adding, “It could take a few more years.” There are no immediate plans yet.
Choi also addressed his recent run of TV appearances. “I’m not a full-time TV personality. I only do it when there’s a specific need for me,” he said. “Going forward, I’ll consider broadcasts seriously if the situation calls for it and there’s a role where I can be of use.”
Foodspoiler is a fresh foodie variety show where two-time cooking-survival winner Choi Kang-rok, Michelin one-star chef Kim Do-yoon, and famed gourmand host Defconn travel across Korea. Drawing on their own experiences and cooking tips, they dub themselves the “spoilers of flavor” and reveal the secrets behind great taste.
Foodspoiler premieres Tuesday the 21st at 9 p.m.
