Gang Dongwon Becomes a 'Dancing Machine' in 'Wild Sing': "I Practiced Breakdancing like It Was Action Choreography"

Actor Gang Dongwon has perfectly embodied a 2000s idol star, showing off remarkable dance skills in the film 'Wild Sing'.

Attending the press preview and conference for 'Wild Sing' held at Lotte Cinema in Lotte World Tower, Seoul, on the afternoon of the 18th, Gang Dongwon spoke about playing Hwang Hyun-woo, the 'dancing machine' of the co-ed group 'Triangle'. He said, "As an actor, performing on stage (as a singer) was a challenge. Since the character was once a successful idol, I had to show off those skills on stage. Actors get NG (no-good) takes if they look at the camera, but singers get NGs if they don't, so every single moment was a challenge."

Gang Dongwon is well-known in the Korean film industry as an actor who excels at action sequences. However, even for an actor who is physically gifted, action and dance are distinct disciplines. Yet, Gang Dongwon pulled off breakdancing and headspin scenes with such proficiency that it would be no surprise if he had been famous for his dancing during his school days.

Regarding the headspin scene shown in the latter part of the film, he added, "I have a bit of a neck issue due to my posture, but it didn't hurt at all when I was practicing the dance. That was quite surprising."

On the challenge of playing an idol 'dancing machine,' Gang Dongwon remarked, "When I read the script, the story was so fun that I approached it thinking I was filming another action movie."

'Wild Sing' is a comedy film that depicts the chaotic process of a disbanded idol group reuniting to get back on stage. The film is also about dreams and passion.

Regarding his approach to playing 'Hwang Hyun-woo,' who struggles for his dreams, Gang Dongwon revealed, "I am an entertainer, too. There were aspects of my younger self, the dreams I had when I was young, that resonated with the character. I tried to channel that energy by thinking about my own past—the desire to work hard and succeed through dance."

'Wild Sing' is a comedy about 'Triangle,' a three-member co-ed dance group that once swept the music scene but disbanded overnight due to an unexpected incident. The film follows their reckless challenge to seize a chance at a comeback 20 years later, and it is set to be released on June 3.
