A man in his 30s who was put on trial for breaking into the home of singer and actress Nana, threatening her with a weapon, and demanding money and valuables has been sentenced to a heavy prison term of seven years in his first trial.
On June 9, the Criminal Division 1 of the Namyangju Branch of the Uijeongbu District Court (presided over by Judge Kim Kuk-sik) sentenced Mr. Kim (34), who was indicted under detention on charges of robbery causing injury, to seven years in prison.
The court explained its sentencing, stating, "Considering the severity of the crime, where the Defendant broke into a private home with a weapon at night when it should have been peaceful, a corresponding punishment is necessary. We comprehensively considered that the victims are appealing for severe punishment due to mental and physical suffering, while also taking into account that the crime ended in an attempt."
During the trial, Kim's side claimed that he did not possess a weapon and had no intent to commit robbery, but the court did not accept this.
The court ruled, "The victims' statements are detailed and consistent," and added, "It was also confirmed that before submitting his mobile phone to the police, the Defendant searched for the level of punishment related to possession of a weapon." The court further explained, "The victim appears to have resisted to protect herself and her family, and the Defendant could have fully anticipated that such resistance might occur."
Previously, Kim was indicted on charges of breaking into Nana's home in Acheon-dong, Guri-si, Gyeonggi-do, in November last year, threatening Nana and her mother, and demanding money and valuables.
The prosecution had previously demanded a 10-year prison sentence for Kim during the final hearing held last month.
Previously, Kim had even filed a countersuit against Nana on charges including attempted murder, claiming he was injured while being subdued. During the hearing held on June 4, Kim claimed, "I was stabbed and cut more than 5cm," and asserted that he would submit a medical opinion.
