The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency announced today (June 17) that it will host the 'Korea Biosafety Conference' at Phoenix Island Resort in Jeju from June 18 to 19, in collaboration with the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, the National Institute of Fisheries Science, the National Institute of Wildlife Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Research Safety Headquarters.

The event will bring together approximately 500 researchers and experts from the fields of animal, human, fisheries, and wildlife health to discuss trends in biosafety technology and national safety management systems.

The keynote presentation on the first day will cover methods to verify health security capabilities through joint external evaluations led by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This will be followed by presentations on safety management for new biotechnologies and the certification of vaccine production facilities.

On June 19, specialized training and discussions will be held regarding safety management systems for high-risk and livestock infectious disease pathogens, as well as medical waste management.

During the conference, the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency plans to share key revisions to the 'Act on the Prevention of Contagious Animal Diseases' and introduce the operation of 'Animal Biosafety Level 3' facilities and the management of carcass waste.

Kim Jin-hyung, Director of the Animal and Plant Hygiene Research Department at the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, stated, "We expect this to be a venue for cooperation where academia, industry, and the government can discuss safety management standards for pathogens and establish policies based on scientific evidence."
