A human leg discovered at a public recycling facility in Incheon is highly likely to be medical waste, authorities said.
The Incheon Yeonsu Police Station announced that it is conducting an investigation based on the high probability that the human left leg found at the site is medical waste.
On June 10, a portion of a human left leg wrapped in bandages was discovered during the sorting of recyclables at a living resource recovery center in Incheon.
The physical dimensions released by the police indicated a foot size of 210mm and a length of 41cm from just below the knee to the heel.
Based on the fact that the growth plates of the discovered leg were closed, the National Forensic Service (NFS) determined it belonged to an adult between 161cm and 165cm tall and had been conducting detailed forensic examinations and DNA analysis.
Police had also been contacting families of missing adults in the Gyeongin region to collect DNA samples for comparison with the DNA secured from the discovered leg.
The police had expanded their investigation team from the original 64 members by adding 38 officers from the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency's regional investigation unit, bringing the total to 102 personnel to identify the victim and trace how the body part arrived at the facility.
Although police analyzed dashcam footage from the 22 vehicles that delivered recyclables to the recovery center on the day the leg was found, as well as CCTV footage of the recycling process, they were unable to locate other body parts or definitively identify the individual.
Amid these efforts, the possibility that the leg is medical waste has been raised. Consequently, the police have requested an emergency DNA analysis from the NFS to confirm whether it is indeed a body part from a patient currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital.
