The 21st Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival successfully wrapped up its three-day run on August 2. Held at Songdo Moonlight Festival Park in Incheon, the festival featured 66 domestic and international teams and drew approximately 150,000 concertgoers.
This year's slogan was "REBOOT. THE PORT OPENS," with visible efforts made everywhere to address past shortcomings. Organizers focused on reducing wait times by dividing the ticket booth into two to separate entry and exit flows, and placed convenience facilities such as pop-up stores and experiential event booths throughout the wide venue, considering the summer weather and extensive walking distances.
The headliners changed each day. The first day on July 31 featured Khruangbin, the second day on August 1 featured Massive Attack, and the final day on August 2 was headlined by Pixies, completing a diverse spectrum of lineups.
The presence of domestic artists stood out particularly on the second day, August 1. Lee Seung-yoon, who performed for the fifth consecutive year (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026), opened with "Waterfall" and performed a total of 10 songs including "PunKanon," "Gibberish," "Pricey Hangover," "Yeok Seong," and "An Ode to the Unseen Hearts." Though his stage comments lasted less than a minute, he utilized the wide stage and walked right down the middle aisle among the audience, showing a provocative sense of freedom that crossed boundaries into the crowd.
The band Hyukoh also performed 15 songs nonstop without a single word of commentary. They only briefly talked with the audience right before their final song, and it was a relentless performance that even saw the vocalist's voice crack in the middle of the set. Throughout the day's performance, the mosh pit remained active and thrilled the audience. In addition, collaborative stages with Chang Pil-soon and guitarist Ham Chun-ho elevated the evening atmosphere.
As the festival took place during a scorching heatwave with daytime highs nearing 40 degrees Celsius, safety issues were also a key concern. There were actually instances where ambulances were dispatched to transport concertgoers showing symptoms of heatstroke. In response, organizers expanded medical booths compared to last year, stationed medical staff and ambulances throughout the venue at all times, and implemented cool zones, water spray trucks, and improved waiting flows.
The atmosphere at the site was also evident in the preparedness of the attendees. Quite a few people brought coolers filled with ice water, picnic mats, umbrellas to block the sun, portable chargers, arm sleeves, and handheld electric fans, yet reactions poured in that the heat was still difficult to endure. LUSH washed away the midsummer heat with a unique event titled "We Will Wash You."
"Penta-robics," a participatory program hosted by comedian Choi Hye-sun, combined full-body workouts with rock festival vibes, drawing audiences to the front of the stage even during waiting times. Attendees continued to give positive reviews, saying operations had improved compared to last year.
Massive Attack, who decorated the nighttime slot, prominently featured social criticism messages. Vocalist Elizabeth Fraser joined the stage, which was set against documentary-style background visuals, to deliver a live performance of their signature song "Teardrop."
The Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival is a representative midsummer rock festival where the weather serves as the biggest variable.
Whether a festival held in intense heat becomes a "hardship" or another form of "romance" depends on the core essence of a festival pursuing rock music. In that regard, this year's festival reaffirmed the reputation of South Korea's largest rock festival by delivering impressive memories and experiences to a crowd of 150,000 while leaving anticipation for next year.
