On September 15, rapper Kerrigan May, a friend of Pi, shared screenshots of KakaoTalk messages exchanged with Pi on her Instagram Story. In the messages, Pi wrote, "May, I love you," "Will you get revenge for me?", "Please, I really was a victim," and "Please get revenge for me." The messages appeared to suggest that Pi was contemplating taking her own life.
Kerrigan May subsequently wrote in the Story, "My friend BJ Pi had been suffering for years because of a sexual assault case, and the verdict came out today: the defendant was found not guilty. She was so devastated by the injustice that she took her own life." She added, "There were witnesses who were there that day, as well as CCTV footage. Why is the law in South Korea like this?" The Story has since been deleted.
According to reports, Pi attended a group dinner on September 14, 2024. After becoming heavily intoxicated, she was taken to a hotel she had reserved in a car driven by a designated driver arranged by a female acquaintance. When Pi woke up, A, who had been waiting at the hotel, reportedly told the designated driver, "She’s with me, so I’ll take care of her." He then took the car keys, drove away from the hotel and stopped in a nearby alley.
Pi alleged that A sexually assaulted her in the vehicle, including by touching her body without her consent.
A denied the allegations, saying that he followed Pi because he was concerned about her condition, that Pi had asked him to pull over in the alley, and that he had only shaken her shoulder to wake her up and never touched her sexually.
The court reportedly acquitted A in the first trial on September 15, approximately two years after the alleged incident. The court found that A had arrived at the hotel before Pi and had taken the car keys and driven to the nearby alley, but noted that there was no physical evidence, such as dashcam footage, that directly captured what happened inside the vehicle.
