The Japanese animated film "Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island" has reclaimed the No. 1 spot at the box office.
According to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for movie tickets on October 15, "Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island" drew 75,246 moviegoers nationwide on October 14, Culture Day. Its cumulative audience stands at 1,415,028.
Released on September 30, "Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island" had previously topped the daily box office twice after its premiere, but spent most of its run in the No. 2 position behind "The Assassin(s)". Entering its third week in theaters, "Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island" reclaimed the summit by outpacing "The Assassin(s)"—which began a downward trend starting on Culture Day—by a margin of more than double.
"Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island" is an animated film depicting a suspicious subjugation mission in which Chiikawa and friends, drawn by the sweet temptation of 100 times the regular pay, head to an uncharted island and uncover the secrets hidden there. It is based on the popular feature-length episode "Siren Arc" from "Chiikawa," serialized by Japanese illustrator Nagano.
