KBS has responded to a viewer petition calling for an actress to be removed from one of its dramas because her brother was convicted in connection with a case involving the death of a woman in her 20s who fell from a Busan officetel, stating that it cannot take action against someone solely because of their family relationship.

On September 16, KBS stated on its viewer petition board, "We extend our sincere condolences to the bereaved family." The network continued, "Although we screen cast members for their own criminal history and whether they have been involved in any social controversies, we do not conduct prior background checks on cast members' family members, nor would it be realistically possible to do so."

KBS also made clear that removing the actress or taking other measures against her would be difficult, citing Article 13, Paragraph 3 of the Constitution of the Republic of Korea, which states that "no citizen shall be subjected to unfavorable treatment on account of an act committed by a relative." The network added that taking action against someone solely because they are a member of the same family would likewise not be possible.

Earlier, on September 3, the victim's bereaved family posted a petition on KBS's viewer petition board titled "We Are the Bereaved Family of the Victim in the Busan Officetel Fall Case," protesting the appearance of the alleged perpetrator's older sister on television.

The family wrote, "The perpetrator's sister is appearing in a significant role in a KBS evening daily drama, laughing and crying on television while pursuing her career as an actress. Our daughter died unjustly, while the perpetrator's sister continues to succeed as an actress." They appealed to KBS, saying, "As a public broadcaster, please clarify whether you were aware of these circumstances and take responsible action." The petition received 1,260 signatures, meeting the threshold for a response from KBS.

The incident occurred in January 2024 at a ninth-floor officetel in Busan. The victim fell to her death while arguing with her ex-boyfriend, identified as A. A was sentenced to three years and six months in prison in the first trial and three years and two months in the second trial on charges including violating the Stalking Punishment Act and intimidation.

The bereaved family argued that A should also face an allegation of aiding and abetting suicide, citing the fact that the victim was hanging from the window frame at the time of the incident. However, the allegation was not reflected in the court proceedings.

KBS's response to the petition has sparked an online debate. Some users have expressed sympathy for the bereaved family and their pain, while others have urged caution, arguing that holding an adult family member responsible for a relative's actions would amount to a modern-day form of guilt by association.

Park Tae-hwan, who became the first South Korean to win an Asian Games MVP, will reveal for the first time an unexpected incident he experienced on his way to receive the MVP award during the 2006 Doha Asian Games. Following this, Hwang Jae-gyun, who became a mother-son gold medalist duo alongside his mother, will share emotional phone call behind-the-scenes stories he exchanged with his mother immediately after winning the gold medal.

Notably, Jun Hyun-moo's exceptional preparation ahead of his Asian Games broadcasting debut is set to shine. Jun Hyun-moo directly briefed major national team events, impressing even veteran caster Bae Sung-jae, and had a surprise reunion with weightlifting fairy Park Hye-jung, drawing witty remarks and a golden determination from her.

Musical actor and singer Enoch is returning to the stage in the musical "Chicago".

His agency, EMK Entertainment (CEO Kim Ji-won), stated, "Enoch has confirmed his appearance as Billy Flynn in the musical 'Chicago', which opens on December 5 at the LG Signature Hall, LG Arts Center Seoul. As he has gained diverse stage experience through numerous musicals and other performances, please look forward to the fatal charm of Enoch's Billy Flynn in this show musical."

Set in 1920s Chicago, "Chicago" is a show musical that tells the story of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly, two women who end up in prison for murder, and Billy Flynn, the lawyer representing them. As of 2026, it is the longest-running American musical in global musical history, and in South Korea, it has become a steady seller with 1,729 performances and approximately 1.8 million audience members over 26 years since its premiere in 2000.

Following its unprecedented achievement of a 100 percent seat occupancy rate in 2024, which proved its unrivaled status, Enoch is set to join "Chicago" during its peak era as a new Billy Flynn, showcasing chameleon-like charms.

Enoch is expected to make the upcoming "Chicago" performances even more brilliant by showcasing a high synchronization rate with the character of Billy Flynn, boasting the sharp suit fit he displayed through his mini-album "Mr. SWING" released last year, as well as stage-dominating acting and vocals.

With his confirmed appearance in "Chicago", Enoch is signaling a busy year following his appearances earlier this year in the musical "Fan Letter" and the musical "Gwanghwamun Love Song", which opened on the 6th, marking three consecutive musical projects. Internet broadcaster Pi (real name Kang Da-on) has sparked concern after messages suggesting that she was considering taking her own life emerged shortly after a man she had accused of sexual assault was acquitted in the first trial.

On September 15, rapper Kerrigan May, a friend of Pi, shared screenshots of KakaoTalk messages exchanged with Pi on her Instagram Story. In the messages, Pi wrote, "May, I love you," "Will you get revenge for me?", "Please, I really was a victim," and "Please get revenge for me." The messages appeared to suggest that Pi was contemplating taking her own life.

Kerrigan May subsequently wrote in the Story, "My friend BJ Pi had been suffering for years because of a sexual assault case, and the verdict came out today: the defendant was found not guilty. She was so devastated by the injustice that she took her own life." She added, "There were witnesses who were there that day, as well as CCTV footage. Why is the law in South Korea like this?" The Story has since been deleted.

According to reports, Pi attended a group dinner on September 14, 2024. After becoming heavily intoxicated, she was taken to a hotel she had reserved in a car driven by a designated driver arranged by a female acquaintance. When Pi woke up, A, who had been waiting at the hotel, reportedly told the designated driver, "She’s with me, so I’ll take care of her." He then took the car keys, drove away from the hotel and stopped in a nearby alley.

Pi alleged that A sexually assaulted her in the vehicle, including by touching her body without her consent.

A denied the allegations, saying that he followed Pi because he was concerned about her condition, that Pi had asked him to pull over in the alley, and that he had only shaken her shoulder to wake her up and never touched her sexually.

The court reportedly acquitted A in the first trial on September 15, approximately two years after the alleged incident. The court found that A had arrived at the hotel before Pi and had taken the car keys and driven to the nearby alley, but noted that there was no physical evidence, such as dashcam footage, that directly captured what happened inside the vehicle.

"Whenever Possible" took first place among Tuesday variety shows, fueled by the unique chemistry between 93-line best friends, actor Yoo Seung-ho and DAY6's Young K, along with dopamine-boosting games.

According to Nielsen Korea, a ratings research company, on the 16th, the previous day's broadcast of SBS "Whenever Possible" recorded a peak viewership rating of 4%, 3.1% for households, and 1% for 20-49 viewership, sweeping first place in its time slot and across all Tuesday variety shows.

In this broadcast, the two MCs Yu Jae-seok and Yoo Yeonseok were joined by guests Yoo Seung-ho and Young K as they sought out spare moments in the Cheongdam-dong area. The two, who formed a bond through a DAY6 music video, showed off their heartwarming friendship by saying, "We are connected even without speaking."

Young K drew laughter by revealing his exceptional appetite, sharing, "Not long ago, I ate budae-jjigae with four packs of ramen noodles added. Back when I was a trainee, I once refilled my rice eight times at an all-you-can-eat restaurant and got scolded by the owner." The blockbuster romance fantasy Disney+ original series "The Remarried Empress" has officially unveiled its main poster and main trailer.

"The Remarried Empress" is an epic romance fantasy chronicle depicting Navier (played by Shin Mina), the flawless empress of the Eastern Empire, who is blindsided by a divorce demand from Emperor Sovieshu (played by Ju Ji-hoon) after he becomes infatuated with runaway slave Rashta (played by Lee Seyoung). Prosecutors have taken steps to preserve assets owned by Kim Se-ui, head of the YouTube channel Hover Lab, who was arrested and indicted on charges of defaming actor Kim Soo-hyun, in an effort to recover suspected criminal proceeds.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office’s Criminal Proceeds Recovery Department, led by Senior Prosecutor So Jung-su, announced on Sept. 15 that it had completed the registration of a provisional seizure on land owned by Kim on Sept. 10, in connection with suspected criminal proceeds totaling 169.4 million won.

A provisional seizure is a court-ordered measure that freezes a defendant’s assets before a criminal case is finalized, preventing the defendant from concealing or disposing of the assets. The seizure or provisional seizure is then recorded on the property registry.

The Criminal Proceeds Recovery Department said that after Kim’s arrest, it worked with the Women and Children’s Crime Investigation Division 2 to identify a larger amount of suspected criminal proceeds than the amount initially identified by police.

Police had previously estimated the proceeds at about 5.44 million won and applied for a provisional seizure. However, the court rejected the request on June 25, citing the relatively small amount of proceeds compared with the value of the real estate and finding that asset preservation was unnecessary.

Following a further investigation, prosecutors determined that Kim had received at least 54.4 million won in donations and earned at least 115 million won in advertising revenue from content related to the alleged defamation of Kim Soo-hyun. Prosecutors subsequently sought a provisional seizure of Kim’s assets, and the court granted the request.

Kim was arrested and indicted on June 23 on charges of uploading YouTube videos between March and December last year that portrayed Kim Soo-hyun as having been in a six-year relationship with the late Kim Sae-ron, beginning when she was 15, despite the absence of such a relationship. Prosecutors allege that he used arbitrarily edited KakaoTalk chat screenshots and fabricated audio recordings to make the relationship appear genuine.

At the first preparatory hearing held on Sept. 11 before Criminal Division 26 of the Seoul Central District Court, Kim’s legal team denied all charges and asked the court to acquit him.

Meanwhile, following Kim’s arrest, Hover Lab has continued operating its YouTube channel, with individuals including music director Lee Han, who composed and arranged the music for the musical "Park Chung-hee," helping run the channel.

In a letter from prison, Kim appealed for help, saying, "Even the money deposited into my prison account has been provisionally seized, so I don’t even have money to buy bottled water, toilet paper, toothpaste or a toothbrush." He also said, "Hover Lab’s donations have fallen to one-tenth of their previous level, and last month the director couldn’t even receive his salary."

The court has accepted the injunction filed by EXO members CHEN, BAEKHYUN, and XIUMIN (hereafter CBX) to suspend the effectiveness of their exclusive contracts with agency INB100, citing unpaid settlements.

On the 15th, the 50th Civil Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Lee Sang-hoon) granted the injunction application filed by CBX against INB100. As a result, the effectiveness of the exclusive contracts will be suspended until the first-instance ruling on the main lawsuit for confirmation of the non-existence of the exclusive contracts.

The court stated, "While INB100 had the obligation to pay settlement amounts according to the contracts when profits were generated from CBX's entertainment activities, it has not done so to date. The mutual trust has been broken due to INB100's attributable faults."

The court added, "The fundamental trust underlying the contracts has collapsed, making it difficult to further maintain a normal exclusive relationship. If the main judgment on the validity of the contracts is prolonged, CBX's independent entertainment activities during the remaining contract period will be severely restricted." It further noted, "This goes beyond the simple economic aspect of a contractual relationship and risks seriously infringing upon constitutional fundamental rights, such as CBX's freedom of career choice and freedom of activity."

Previously, CBX notified INB100 of the termination of their exclusive contracts in March and April due to unpaid contract fees and settlements. When the company did not respond, they filed the injunction application to suspend the effectiveness of the exclusive contracts along with a lawsuit to confirm the non-existence of the exclusive contracts on the 18th of last month.

INB100 is a company established by BAEKHYUN in June 2023, and it was incorporated into One Hundred Label, led by CEO Cha Ga-won, in May of the following year. CEO Cha was indicted and detained last August on fraud charges involving tens of billions of won, with her first public trial scheduled for the 13th of next month. Singers such as Lee Seung-gi, Lee Mujin, and THE BOYZ have also successively notified the agency of exclusive contract terminations, citing unpaid settlements and other reasons.
