SBS secured the top spot in viewership ratings, vividly capturing South Korean badminton's historic golden moments at the 2026 Nagoya Asian Games.

According to ratings research firm Nielsen Korea on September 30, SBS recorded a 3.8% household rating and a 0.9% rating in the key 20-49 demographic in the Seoul metropolitan area for its live broadcast of the badminton women's singles final featuring An Se-young the previous day. Surpassing MBC (1.8% household, 0.8% 20-49), KBS2 (1.8% household, 0.1% 20-49), and TV Chosun (0.4% household, 0.0% 20-49), SBS swept first place across all four key metrics: metropolitan households, nationwide households, metropolitan 20-49, and nationwide 20-49. Its coverage of the women's soccer semifinal, where the national team aimed for its first-ever final appearance, also ranked first in its time slot with a 2.8% metropolitan household rating, demonstrating the network's powerhouse reputation in sports broadcasting.

During the broadcast, the badminton women's doubles duo of Lee So-hee and Baek Ha-na captured an Asian Games gold medal for the first time in 24 years, followed by An Se-young becoming the first player in history to win back-to-back Asian Games women's singles titles. Sportscaster Bae Sung-jae remarked, "She is not an athlete representing an era, but an athlete creating an era," while commentator Lee Yong-dae marveled, "I really wonder how far the An Se-young era will go; it is truly incredible."

In weightlifting, Park Hye-jeong broke both the South Korean national record and the Asian Games record in the snatch with 133 kg and lifted a total of 300 kg to secure a valuable silver medal. Commentator Yoon Jin-hee offered encouragement, saying, "She has taken another step forward in her life."

As the film "The Assassin(s)" faces allegations of historical distortion alongside newly raised suspicions of Chinese capital investment, the production company has stepped forward to draw the line.

On September 29, Hive Media Corp, the production company behind "The Assassin(s)," released an official statement, announcing, "As claims regarding the alleged 'inflow of Chinese capital' involving our company and the film 'The Assassin(s)' have recently been spreading across online communities and select media outlets, we are providing the exact facts." They completely denied the suspicions, stating, "There has been absolutely no inflow of Chinese capital into the production or investment process of our company and the film 'The Assassin(s).'" According to the production company, "The Assassin(s)" is a project led by a domestic production crew and creators, independently planned and produced based purely on domestic capital.

Hive Media Corp emphasized, "We are well aware that various opinions and concerns continue to be raised surrounding the project. We respect criticisms and diverse perspectives regarding the film." However, they stressed, "Matters regarding investment and production capital are objectively verifiable facts," adding, "We hope that false information will no longer be magnified or reproduced."

Previously, People Power Party Representative Joo Jin-woo raised suspicions of Chinese capital investment, citing past investment pursuit records involving a consortium that included a Chinese-affiliated financial firm in connection with the production company of "The Assassin(s)."

The controversy surrounding "The Assassin(s)" initially erupted over its historical depiction. The film uses the August 15, 1974 assassination of First Lady Yuk Young-soo as a motif, depicting a story tracing the suspicions and behind-the-scenes forces surrounding the incident. It stars Yoo Hai-jin, Park Hae-il, and Lee Minho, and is directed by Director Hur Jin-ho. While the film does not directly identify the mastermind behind the incident, it presents a hypothesis through certain characters and dramatic setups that President Park Chung-hee's side or the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) at the time may have been involved, prompting criticism of historical distortion from some quarters, including the People Power Party and the Park Chung-hee Presidential Memorial Foundation.

The criticism directed at "The Assassin(s)" also spilled over into actors' supportive messages. On September 23, the film's release date, the team behind "The Assassin(s)" revealed handwritten messages of support from Lee Jung-jae, Director Lee Joon-ik, Kim Goeun, Jang Dong-gun, Lee Young-ae, PARK JIHOON, Director Kang Yoon-sung, screenwriter Kim Eun-sook, screenwriter Kim Eun-hee, Uhm Jung-hwa, Lee Sang Yi, Kim Sung-kyun, Im Soo-jung, and others. Lee Young-ae wrote, "I thoroughly enjoyed it—thrilling and deeply moving. Director Hur Jin-ho is the best!!" while Kim Goeun wrote, "It made me feel so grateful for the present. Please make sure to watch and feel it together!"

Following this, some online commenters left remarks on Lee Young-ae and Kim Goeun's social media accounts, criticizing them as thoughtless and posting comments such as "I will boycott your projects and advertised products." Amid this situation, it was confirmed on September 29 that a video related to "The Assassin(s)" was deleted from the channel of film YouTuber G Movie, who boasts 4.17 million subscribers. G Movie has not issued any separate statement regarding the reason for the removal.

Meanwhile, regarding the historical distortion criticism, the production company emphasized, "Nowhere in the film is a specific individual defined as the mastermind behind the incident, nor are hypotheses and dramatic setups presented as historical facts," adding, "It is not a film produced with any specific political agenda." Director Hur Jin-ho previously explained at a press and distributor preview that the film does not aim to uncover the ultimate truth or the mastermind behind the incident, but rather sought to portray the people and emotions of those who lived through that era as they navigated the events.

With the rise of social media, so-called cancel culture has reached its peak. Cancel culture refers to a phenomenon where an individual faces collective ostracization, rejection, and backlash when their past or present statements, actions, or beliefs are deemed socially unacceptable. In today's internet climate, once someone becomes the target of public outrage, reversing that narrative is extraordinarily difficult.

One of the most intriguing paradoxes in the entertainment scene recently has been the journey of rapper Swings. At one point, he stood as a divisive figure in the hip-hop scene and among the public, often viewed as the very symbol of an unfavorable celebrity. Yet today, alongside the climb of the film "Tazza 4" to the top of the box office, he is transforming into a widely embraced entertainer and actor.

Ever since his heyday, opinions on Swings have been sharply split down the middle. To some, his assertive demeanor came across as authentic self-confidence, while to others, it felt like pure arrogance. However, he never denied or ran away from the mockery directed at him. Instead, he leaned into it and actively turned it to his advantage. Meeting ridicule head-on and converting it into memes is seen as a remarkably sharp move, whether it was calculated or not.

Last April, Swings faced one of the gravest crises of his career when fellow junior rapper BIG Naughty released consecutive diss tracks aimed squarely at him. A wave of allegations followed, including claims of physical altercations during drinking sessions and financial disputes surrounding the sale of past neighboring rights (master recordings). Rather than responding with rap verses, Swings chose to address each matter point by point via an Instagram live stream. He explained the financial difficulties that forced him to sell his label's master rights and calmly walked through his settlement records with label artists, at times holding back tears. Appealing to the public with vulnerability while consistently maintaining care and affection for his junior peer earned him both public sympathy and newfound respect.

A similar pattern emerged when he ventured into acting. When he first announced his ambitions, public reaction was far from welcoming. Many questioned whether he was treating acting like a joke, accompanied by sharp skepticism regarding his acting chops. Yet he used those low expectations as fuel to double down on his preparation, eventually securing a role in the film "Tazza 4".

At a press conference for the production, he reflected on the milestone, sharing that while he had worked in music for 20 years and always loved movies, he never expected to be cast just six months after publicly stating he would pursue acting. He explained that while he had braced himself for a journey of at least five years, the opportunity arrived much faster than anticipated.

Still, this newly reclaimed public favor carries an undeniable shadow. Over the years, Swings has repeatedly embraced junior artists mired in controversies under his own label. While his philosophy that an artist's personal character should be separated from their music has sometimes been framed as hip-hop's expressive freedom, it has also drawn persistent criticism for treating artists' private conduct too lightly.

Recently, that forgiving stance came under scrutiny once again after affiliated rapper Ksmartboi (legal name Kim Sang-min) was arrested and referred for prosecution on marijuana-related charges while still on probation for previous marijuana usage. During that earlier probation period, Swings had appeared on broadcasts alongside the rapper and benefited from the backing of junior artists, including Kim, during the diss exchange last April. How this recent incident will ultimately reflect back on Swings remains something the public will be closely observing.

Nevertheless, Swings' blueprint for survival offers plenty of food for thought in an entertainment industry preoccupied with polished facades. Instead of pretending to be flawless, he laid his flaws and financial hardships bare before the audience. What turned public aversion into goodwill was not flowery rhetoric, but his composure in laughing off criticism and his readiness to shoulder responsibility for his decisions. At the same time, Swings has now moved beyond being a hip-hop artist championing raw freedom to an actor winning over audiences in commercial cinema. How he manages the risks he has harbored for so long will continue to be his biggest assignment moving forward.

Pop artist and television personality Nancy Lang (real name Park Hye-ryeong, 50) has finalized the termination of her exclusive contract with her management agency in the wake of her recent drunk driving incident.

According to Edaily on September 29, Nancy Lang recently completed the procedures to terminate her exclusive contract with Megaton Entertainment. Both parties discussed ending the contract after she was caught driving under the influence, and all related paperwork has now been finalized. An insider familiar with the agency's situation stated, "Following the drunk driving incident, mutual trust broke down, which ultimately led to the termination of the contract."

Earlier, on September 8 around 3:45 AM, Nancy Lang was booked by the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul for alleged drunk driving along a street in Gangnam District. Police officers arrived at the scene following a tip-off about a suspected DUI case and took her into custody. Tests revealed that her blood alcohol content was well above the 0.08% mark, which warrants the revocation of a driver's license.

After the incident came to light, Nancy Lang issued an apology, stating, "I got behind the wheel because my home was close by after drinking one or two glasses of champagne at an acquaintance's birthday gathering," adding, "It was a complacent judgment." However, regarding descriptions of her being "heavily intoxicated," she commented, "That does not reflect the actual situation," and requested that the facts be reported accurately.

Following the incident, Nancy Lang continued promotional efforts on social media by posting videos and visitor reviews related to her solo exhibition "Play: A New Language." Some online users responded critically to the posts, remarking, "It does not look like she is reflecting on her actions right after being caught drunk driving."

Actor Lee Jung-eun is taking on her first medical noir project since her debut through "Doctor X: Mafia in White".

SBS's "Whenever Possible" firmly defended its Tuesday night variety crown thanks to the fiery, high-stakes competitive spirit of Incheon natives Byun Yohan and Roh Jae-won.

According to ratings research firm Nielsen Korea on September 30, the previous day's broadcast of "Whenever Possible" (measured in the Seoul metropolitan area) recorded a peak rating of 4.5%, a household rating of 3.3%, and a 1.1% rating among the key 20-49 demographic. These figures swept first place among all programs in its time slot, as well as the No. 1 spot among all Tuesday variety shows for the 20-49 demographic.

On this episode, co-hosts Yu Jae-seok and Yoo Yeonseok set out with "gap friends" Byun Yohan and Roh Jae-won to seek out pockets of free time across Incheon. The moment Yu Jae-seok met newlywed Byun Yohan, who recently married singer Tiffany Young, he voiced his disappointment, asking, "Why didn't you invite me to the wedding?" Byun Yohan explained, "We had a quiet ceremony with just our families," but as Yu Jae-seok continued to tease with suspicion, Byun fired back, "Would they be fake family members?" sending the set into fits of laughter.

Incheon natives Byun Yohan and Roh Jae-won then unleashed their unstoppable competitive drive. Meeting their first "gap owner," an exemplary taxi driver, Byun Yohan cleared round one on his very first attempt in the "Master of Parking" game, where players maneuver a toy taxi into a designated parking zone. "I was in the exact same position 14 years ago," Roy Kim shared. "I had received several offers to serve as an audition judge over the years, but I couldn't find the courage because I felt I still had my own hands full." Explaining why he decided to join this time, he said, "However, 'The Ballad of Us 2' isn't about picking fully polished singers. I decided to participate because I felt I could guide and give courage to these young contestants as they pursue their dreams and grow."

Allegations of review bombing surrounding the film "The Assassin(s)," which has been embroiled in controversy over historical distortion, have turned out to be true. On September 29, the portal site Naver announced measures regarding the "handling of duplicate counts for movie reviews and recommendation metrics" via an official notice.

Naver stated, "Recently, an issue occurred where certain audience reviews were registered multiple times, and sympathy and unsympathy counts were tabulated redundantly. Immediately upon identifying the issue, we implemented emergency measures, and we have now corrected the system so that this no longer occurs."

The platform added, "Duplicate reviews registered for the affected films will be deleted, and redundant sympathy and unsympathy figures will be excluded to reflect normal tallies," adding, "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused while using the service. We will exercise greater caution to ensure that the same issue does not happen again."

Previously on Naver, more than 50,000 one-star ratings were posted targeting "The Assassin(s)" in just a few days. The top-ranked comment garnered over 1.37 million sympathy votes, raising suspicions of automated macro manipulation.

Following the film's premiere, the backlash has also escalated into attacks against the cast. On September 30, an online user posted across social media and online communities listing actor Yoo Hai-jin's filmography, claiming that he frequently appeared in works dealing with North Korean themes, anti-Japanese sentiments, and criticism of military regimes. People Power Party lawmaker Joo Jin-woo personally left a comment on the post describing him as having "the look of a North Korean." Furthermore, some commenters exerted pressure on the actors' advertising sponsors, with users sharing that they filed complaints regarding Yoo Hai-jin's participation in the film to a food company where he serves as a commercial model.

Released on September 23, "The Assassin(s)" portrays a story investigating the suspicions and forces behind the August 15, 1974 assassination attempt on the First Lady, drawing criticism for allegedly distorting historical facts. As of September 29, the film has recorded an accumulated audience of approximately 1.7 million moviegoers.
