SBS is gearing up to captivate viewers this August with a dynamic lineup of diverse new variety shows and proven seasonal favorites.

Starting with the premiere of "Love Against Time" on August 3, SBS has curated a powerful variety lineup by rolling out new shows every week through the end of August.

The first runner is the 2030 youth dating reality show "Love Against Time" (airs every Monday at 10:00 PM). Capturing the journey of young adults with past medical experiences facing life and love once again, the program has been making major waves both domestically and internationally, entering Netflix Korea's Top 10 and securing overseas OTT contracts right from its premiere.

Next up, Tuesday night's signature mealtime companion "Whenever Possible" (Season 5 premieres Tuesday, August 11 at 9:00 PM) returns for its fifth season. The "Yoo-Yoo MCs" Yu Jae-seok and Yoo Yeonseok, who ranked number one in 2049 viewership ratings for 15 consecutive weeks last season, are teaming up once again. Actor Hwang Jung-min and Jung Hoyeon are set to jump in as guests for the season premiere, raising anticipation.

South Korea's first AI dating survival show "My AI Partner - Strange Romance" (premieres Thursday, August 20 at 9:00 PM) will also lift the veil. Featuring Kian84, known for his raw human charm, alongside Jang Doyoun and Lee Yu-bi, the show is set to deliver fresh dopamine by capturing unpredictable emotional currents as they date their AI partners.

Finally, "My Genie Secretary" (premieres Friday, August 28 at 11:10 PM), which boasts a cumulative 170 million views, returns with a new season. Lee Seo-jin and Kim Kwang-kyu transform into "real secretaries" taking charge of the most confidential areas of a star's life, offering high-end close-up care, with singer BIBI joining as the first guest.

Artist JUNNY appeared on a radio broadcast to share stories about his recent activities and the production process behind his new music.

Appearing on the August 10 broadcast of KBS Cool FM's "Paul Kim's Volume Up," JUNNY delivered a live performance and talked about various musical topics.

As a singer-songwriter and producer who has collaborated with EXO, IU, SHINee member TAEMIN, and more, JUNNY discussed the background of his single "Heaven Can Wait," released in June. He explained that he infused the track with a quiet luxury sensibility, sharing, "While working on the song, I wanted to understand subtle sophistication even better, so I studied by visiting fine dining restaurants and art museums. It is a track designed to offer a refreshing cool feeling during the hot summer."

He also revealed an anecdote related to the song title. Expressing his affection for "Heaven Can Wait," which shares its title with a song by Michael Jackson, he said, "I felt it was destiny." He also shared that he personally learned choreography for the music video shoot. He stated, "Dancer no:ze helped me out. She tailored all the movements and angles to fit me. I hypnotized myself and worked really hard."

During the subsequent live performance, JUNNY sang "Heaven Can Wait" in person. Watching this, host Paul Kim reacted by saying, "You look like someone who used to dance. I thought you were a former trainee."

On this day, JUNNY also shared news that he was promoted to a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Association for 2026 and revealed that he is currently working on a new album.

BLACKPINK met with fans to celebrate their 10th debut anniversary, but the event continues to face various criticisms.

BLACKPINK held a 10th-anniversary meet-and-greet event at the National Museum of Korea in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on the 8th, meeting with 40 fans.

Initially, it was announced that only some members would attend, but the notice was later corrected to state that all four members would be present, leading to a full-group gathering. However, because the announcement was made just two days before the debut anniversary and attendance was strictly limited to 40 people, fan complaints regarding the timing and scale had already arisen even before the event took place.

During the event, the members shared joyful thoughts, expressing gratitude to the members who have been together since their trainee days and to the fans who have sent unwavering support over the past 10 years since their debut. In particular, JISOO was seen shedding tears after the event, deeply moved and touching the hearts of fans.

However, after the event concluded, the return gifts given to fans became a new subject of controversy. Attendees received a bouquet containing two flowers and a set of rice cakes. As it spread through online communities and social media that this rice cake set was identical to a product sold commercially for 6,900 won, some reactions emerged saying that it was disappointing for a 10th-anniversary commemorative gift.

Issues were also raised regarding the operation of the National Museum of Korea, where the event took place. Online witness accounts continuously surfaced stating that access to the museum's special exhibition hall was restricted for a certain period on the day of the event. In addition, a netizen filed a civil complaint with the Audit Office of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, requesting an investigation into whether the entire process of the National Museum of Korea approving the event, using the facilities, restricting viewing, and issuing notices was appropriate.

Actor Yoo Hai-jin, who attracted 16.9 million moviegoers nationwide earlier this year with "The King's Warden", is returning with a new film, "The Assassin(s)". While his previous work targeted the Lunar New Year holiday, his new project aims straight for the Chuseok holiday.

Attending the press conference for "The Assassin(s)" held at CGV Yongsan in Seoul on the morning of the 10th, Yoo Hai-jin described his character, detective Cheol-gu, saying, "He is a role who runs on foot with the instincts of a police officer and questions about the case. I think he will show a sense of suspense."

"The Assassin(s)" tells the story of tracking the suspicions and background behind the First Lady assassination attempt that shocked South Korea on August 15, 1974. As indicated by the logline, the film is motivated by the assassination attempt on First Lady Yuk Young-soo.

Although it is one of the tragedies of modern history, this is the first time the incident has been made into a film. Yoo Hai-jin stated, "I understand this is the first time an assassination attempt on a First Lady is being adapted into a movie. There will be high expectations because of that, and we worked hard to make it."

It is not an easy subject to handle. Director Hur Jin-ho, who directed the film, shared, "It was an event that happened when I was in the 5th grade of elementary school. While this story has continuously been covered on broadcasts and elsewhere, I became interested in the fact that questions about the incident continue to linger. I kept pondering how to approach it. I paid the greatest attention to maintaining a balanced perspective."

True to the director's words, the movie covers the events of that era from various perspectives through a detective chasing the truth and the press. In particular, detective Cheol-gu, played by Yoo Hai-jin, is a figure who watched the occurrence of the incident from the closest range.

Yoo Hai-jin explained the key points of his acting, saying, "Cheol-gu, whom I played, is a person who was at the scene of the incident and a character digging into what the truth is. I prioritized each emotion, such as when a colleague is wrongfully framed and dragged away, when tracking the case, and when approaching the truth."

As it is his next project following the massive success of "The King's Warden", both expectations and pressure regarding box office performance must be significant. Yoo Hai-jin expressed caution, saying, "Many people unexpectedly watched my movie during last Lunar New Year. I hope 'The Assassin(s)' does too, but box office success seems to require everything falling into place properly."

He revealed his inner thoughts by saying, "Fortunately, audiences are visiting a lot these days, so theaters seem to be full of vitality. I hope our movie makes the theater complexion even healthier."

"The Assassin(s)" is scheduled for release in September during Chuseok.

In the teaser video, Lee Seo-jin showed his veteran-like pride, saying, "What haven't I done while filming 'My Genie Secretary'? An opinion piece published in The New York Times regarding BTS withdrawing their submissions from the Grammy Awards is drawing significant attention.

On the 9th (local time), Dan Charnas, a professor at the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University, published an op-ed in The New York Times titled "Pop Music Is the Problem," putting forth arguments in support of BTS's decision.

Previously, BTS voluntarily withdrew their hit album "Arirang" from Grammy consideration in protest of the Recording Academy's newly established Best Asian Pop Performance category. The group stated in a release, "We hope that music can be listened to and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language."

Prof. Charnas evaluated this as "an unusual rebuttal against the Grammys by a group that has long aimed for mainstream American stardom," noting that BTS and many fans view the new category as an attempt to prevent the growing influence of K-pop groups from overshadowing the general categories (Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance). This directly contrasts with the Academy's claim that the category was meant to recognize the growth of Asian popular music.

Prof. Charnas pointed out that the Recording Academy has expanded its award categories from 28 in 1959 to 100 today, stating that much of this increase is "the product of the recording industry's historical racial segregation, which split Black and white artists into separate genres and markets even when they performed musically similar songs." He mentioned examples such as the category being divided into Traditional and Contemporary just months after Beyoncé became the first Black woman to win Best Country Album, along with the creation of the Asian pop category following a major win by a song from "KPop Demon Hunters."

He continued by noting that "the largest Asian entertainment companies may not want to fight this system because they have many new rookies to debut," while evaluating that "BTS is likely the biggest artist in the world since Michael Jackson, and probably the only Korean musical group with the freedom and leverage to spark this kind of change."

Prof. Charnas also emphasized, "The Recording Academy should stop creating new award categories specifically based on race, nationality, or language. If a pop performance category or a pop playlist cannot be defined musically or aesthetically, maybe it shouldn't exist in the first place."

Meanwhile, debates have continued both inside and outside the American music industry following BTS's voluntary withdrawal of their Grammy submissions.

Actor Park Hae-il has chosen the film "The Assassin(s)" as his return to the big screen after four years, heralding another passionate acting transformation.

Attending the press conference for the movie "The Assassin(s)" held at Yongsan CGV in Seoul on the morning of the 10th, Park Hae-il gave meaning to his "film appearance after four years." True to his words, this marks his first film appearance in four years since "Decision to Leave".

Park Hae-il explained his character, saying, "I play Jae-hwan, a mid-level reporter for a newspaper company called Dongsung Ilbo in the 1970s. At the August 15th celebration event, since I am not at the scene, I confirm the occurrence of the assassination through the newspaper company's live broadcast. Then, with a reporter's intuition, I track down the questions and suspicions surrounding the incident, questioning and reporting on it."

This is his second time working with Director Hur Jin-ho following the movie "The Last Princess". Park Hae-il stated, "It is a grateful thing that he sought me out as an actor again after 10 years. When he proposed a new character this time, he mentioned it might not be an easy one, but asked me to play a character who pushes forward firmly and with seasoned skill toward the truth if I took it on. He entrusted it to me with trust, which also brought pressure."

Director Hur Jin-ho explained the reason for choosing Park Hae-il and his contribution on set, saying, "Jae-hwan is a logical person who thinks a lot. So when I looked at the script, actor Park Hae-il came to mind. He plays the role of a leader in the newspaper office space, and he actually helped the junior actors playing reporters a lot so they could immerse themselves in the drama. Figure skating national team member Cha Jun-hwan completely transformed into the webtoon protagonist Sung Jin-woo, captivating the ice rink.

His agency, Fantagio, announced that Cha Jun-hwan successfully completed his first performance for the ice show "Solo Leveling on ICE" held at the Mokdong Indoor Ice Rink of Mokdong Stadium in Seoul on the 7th.

"Solo Leveling on ICE" is a musical-style ice show based on the popular webtoon and web novel of the same name, depicting the process of the protagonist, who was once humanity's weakest weapon, awakening and growing into the strongest hunter.

Playing the protagonist Sung Jin-woo in this performance, Cha Jun-hwan drew cheers from the audience by showcasing an overwhelming skating performance. In particular, rather than stopping at a simple figure skating performance, he directly handled lines, acting, and musical numbers, three-dimensionally completing the character's strong growth narrative.

Cha Jun-hwan's challenge did not stop at the performance on stage. He also directly participated in co-choreography and direction for this performance, showing off his versatile side. Based on a deep understanding of the original work, he expressed each character's emotional line through choreography, with favorable reviews continuing to elevate the quality of the production.
